About Me

Laura Nix is a director, writer and producer working in non-fiction and fiction. She was nominated for an Academy Award for her documentary short, WALK RUN CHA-CHA in 2020. Her critically acclaimed feature documentary INVENTING TOMORROW, about teenagers around the globe tackling environmental issues through science, won a Peabody Award for Best in Documentary, premiered in US Competition at Sundance Film Festival 2018, was broadcast on PBS’ series POV, screened at dozens of film festivals internationally, and won additional awards including the Grand Jury Prize at Seattle International Film Festival. She previously directed the feature length documentaries THE YES MEN ARE REVOLTING (Toronto Film Festival 2014, Berlinale 2015, broadcast internationally), THE LIGHT IN HER EYES (IDFA 2011, POV and Al Jazeera Middle East), and WHETHER YOU LIKE IT OR NOT: THE STORY OF HEDWIG (Frameline 2003), as well as the award-winning fiction feature THE POLITICS OF FUR (Frameline 2002, and 100 film festivals through 2005), and multiple short films. She was named a 2018 Chicken & Egg Breakthrough Filmmaker, and in 2017 was awarded the Sundance Institute/Discovery Impact Fellowship. Laura is a film expert for the U.S. State Department’s American Film Showcase, and a member of the documentary branch of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences.

    Our ability to make documentary films is dependent upon establishing access to and trust with our documentary subjects. How do you approach people you are interested in filming? How do you create a healthy and collaborative relationships with people you want on camera? What ethical questions may come up with your subjects and how will you handle those? What kind of legal arrangement do you need with your subjects to establish their permission? I have created positive and successful collaborations with many subjects over the years, and we can discuss how to start, nurture and maintain these essential relationships.

    Coming up with an idea for a documentary film is just the start. How do you further develop your idea so you’re ready to start pitching it to other people, whether they are subjects, collaborators, or funders? Are you clear yet on who and what you want to film, and how your story might evolve after you begin? Have you realized a coherent formal approach, deciding how you want to film your story, how you envision it being edited, and what kind of documentary you’re making? Things change while we film, what degree of uncertainty do you need to be comfortable with? In order to attract collaborators and funding, you need to be clear on your film first. I will ask you questions about your story and your experience so we can come up with a plan for how you can move your story forward, before you shoot a frame.

  • Getting started as a Documentary Film Director

    You have an idea and you’d like to make a documentary film, but you don’t know where to start, and you’re not sure what might be entailed. We can have a conversation about your project and discuss what it will take to go all the way from conception to releasing a finishing documentary film. We can discuss what the work is for a director during development, pre-production, production, post-production and distribution. Topics can include how to: evaluate and further develop your story idea, get access to subjects, understand what genre of documentary film you want to make, devise a visual strategy, work with producers, come up with a realistic schedule, hire personnel to work with you during production, allow your story to change during production and editorial, understand your role in the edit room, evaluate the financial realities of directing documentaries, communicate your story during distribution, and other questions you may have. We can tailor the discussion so it is most helpful to you and your project.
